This region is located in the center of the peninsula. It is a uniprovincial autonomous region and the main city, Madrid is capital of both the region and the country. Its surface area is 7,995 km2 (4,968 mi2).
The average winter temperature is very cold up in the mountains and somewhat warmer, though not much, in the rest of the region. In summer, however, temperatures are very high and rain is mostly scarce.
It borders with Castilla-León to the north, Castilla-La Mancha to the south, east and west. Agriculture is practically nonexistent in the region; the service industry is most prevalent.
