CHEESELAND
BASQUE COUNTRY

The region is located in the northern part of the peninsula, bordering the Cantabrian Sea to the north (which makes it an important area of fishing ports), Cantabria to the west, La Rioja to the south and Navarre to the east. A small part of northeastern Guipúzcoa province borders with France and is known as the French Basque country. The total surface area is 7,261 km2 (4,512 mi2) and the capital of the region is Vitoria. Euskera, the Basque language is the official one for this region. Its climate is quite rainy all through the year and temperatures are cold in winter and moderate in summer. The industrial sector is at least as important or even more so than that of services. The Idiazábal cheese is produced in the Basque country and Navarre.

Basque country
This region is as old as the Euskal Herria (Basque homeland), as ancestral as its way of living and as generous as its people. Idiazábal cheese was invented a long, long time ago and the region’s people found in its origin a way to conserve milk of excellent quality.
