CHEESELAND
CATALUNYA

This is a natural and historic region in the northeast of Spain. The main mountain ranges are the Pyrenees, the Prelitoral range, the Litoral range and the central flat lands. The climate is Mediterranean on the coast and continental in the interior. This region is more notable for its industrialization than for its livestock breeding. Just as have been found in the central plains and the southeast of Spain, fragments of primitive cheese making utensils are abundant in Catalunya. Such items as a complete plate used as a colander and a ceramic vat were found in Tarragona and Lleida provinces. In the Middle Ages, the transhumance was very important for the development of sheep breeding and the products derived from it. Catalunya is possibly the region where artesian cheeses are being most promoted and in which they are most defended. It is the region with the most specialized shops. The most notable cheeses are those from de Arán, Brull, Llenguat, Llivia, Mato, Montsec, Recuit, Selva, Serrat, Tendre, Tronchón, Tupí, Corca, Plana de Vich or Garrotxa.

Pallars Sobirá
Pallars Sobirá is an area of high mountains, broken ravines and energetic rivers. It is a region of abundant Romanesque art in churches, castles and ramparts. Since this is an interior region, the climate is mainly continental, the vegetation is important, being situated in towns near the Pyrenees. The transhumance was very important in the Middle Ages.

Pyrenees of Girona
In Catalunya the climate is Mediterranean on the coast and more continental in the interior. The region where Drap cheese is produced, the Pyrenees of Girona, has an extreme continental climate of mountains. Catalunya is possibly the region where artesian cheeses are being most promoted and in which they are most defended. This is the region with the most shops specialized in this product.
